Tutorial (Word): Hanging Indents

Usually, only the first line of a paragraph is indented. However, sometimes you would like the reverse, called a hanging indent, where every line except for the first is indented. This is used sometimes in bibliographies. Though this can be achieved by using the Tab key, it is much easier to use the ruler to set the hanging indent. Read the rest of this tutorial to learn how.

1. Select the area of the document in which you would like to create a hanging indent. to select the whole document, press Ctrl + A.

2. Look at the ruler at the top of the page. The triangle at the top marks how far the first line is indented. The second triangle marks how far the following lines in that paragraph are indented. The rectangle at the bottom allows you to move both markers at once
3. Next, grab the rectangle and drag it half an inch to the right, to set the indent for every line after the first.

4. Finally, grab the top triangle and drag it back to 0 inches from the left margin.

That's all there is to it!
